Navigating the New Structure of Boat Licence Pricing

Recently, the Canal and River Trust made a significant announcement regarding increases in boat licence fees, with significant surcharges of up to 75% being applied for boats without a home mooring. These changes which will be introduced over the next 5 years in a phased approach starting from April 2024, will affect all boaters up and down the waterways of the UK.

The standard licence fee will see above-inflation increase in each of the next five years for all boats, with surcharges of 25% by 2028 being applied for boats without a home mooring.

Wide beam boats without a home mooring will see the most significant increases as a combination of wide beam surcharges and boats without a home mooring surcharge being applied.

The Canal and River Trust have also announced a reduction of the prompt payment discount from 2.5% to 2% and a reduction in the online payment discount from 2.5% to 0.5%.

These changes, whilst potentially impacting your budget, the Canal and River Trust say are crucial for maintaining and improving the ageing waterways, enhancing the overall boating experience for all.
